Pyromania Installation

The Pyromania installation, a project that culminated from 3 months of arduous work, was an installation set up inside Vega School Bordeaux during the annual showcase of student work. For this, I wanted to create a unique experience for anyone who spoke with me. Anyone can make a good design or write a good line, but knowing who did it and why they did it will bring to light true talent.

Further explaining

The idea for this installation comes from the name of my personal brand: Pyromania. While fire and what it symbolises has been used across the world for centuries, I chose a different approach to the meaning. I see fire not as a destructive, hateful force, but a kind and social one. Fire is often represented as the destructive element, the most powerful of them all, but it appears we forget how many friendships are forged by simply having a chat at a braai, huddling around a campfire, even something as simple as lighting a stranger’s cigarette can lead to a lifetime, unbreakable bond. Pyromania is not an obsession with destruction, but an obsession with passion, perfection, and community.

During my time at Vega, I became known as THE Copywriter in my year. I was the fellow you would come to if you needed a concept to soar, or if you needed a concept in 5 minutes. I was able to help many of my peers with conceptualising, which led to concepts that secured awards, high marks and other accolades. In the installation, I wanted to show that. I wanted others to know that I was bringing intellect, wild concepts, and seemingly impossible ideas into our world, mostly because I’m winging it.

What happens here.

The concept for this installation was fairly simple but became very complex in execution. I was dressed as a serial arsonist, complete with gas mask, matches, and tactical rig. The booth I sat in contained the pin board found in classic murder mystery movies, and portrayed me as a passionate, cautious, and strange individual, who has an obsession with perfection.
